Modern Mix Monday – AGRO Cafe on Granville Island

Looking for something to do? Every Monday morning, we present to you “Modern Mix Monday”, a brief but link-filled one-liner review of our past weekend loaded with suggestions to inspire you for your next!

Just like 49th Parallel Coffee is flooded with tones of baby blue and brown, the color scheme of ARGO Cafe (1363 Railspur Alley) consists of autumn tones of orange and brown. I went to the Granville Island cafe on Sunday afternoon and thought the lofty, industrial look of the venue was a trendy cafe to lounge at. I ordered their organic dark hot chocolate while my friend got an unsweetened matcha latte, both of which had a swirly leaf pattern “drawn” into the foam.

From their website:

Our aim is to provide the people of Vancouver with organic, fair trade coffee, at a great price and in a great location. Our cafes are relaxing, modern environments that help tell the story of the variety of places coffee originates. Our walls are flooded with projected images of our farmers in Kenya, helping to both educate and stimulate while you enjoy your coffee.

Modern Mix Monday – 49th Parallel Coffee

On Saturday, I went to 49th Parallel (2152 West 4th Avenue) for coffee. 49th Parallel is a local (Burnaby) coffee roasting company which supplies coffee beans to buyers all around the world and is founded by the same guys who brought us Caffè Artigiano. I have only been to 49th Parallel twice, but it’s a great meeting spot to take a break from shopping along West 4th. Last time I ordered the Blue Earl Grey which came in a cute, baby blue teapot. This time, I ordered off the menu, a Chai Tea Latte.

Modern Mix Monday – Jules Bistro

Jules Bistro (216 Abbott Street) is a French bistro located in Gastown and where I went for an afternoon sit-down on Saturday. Nonetheless, I would not recommend going there for tea and coffee as we did – save that for a specialty coffee or teahouse instead. With outdoor seating and the weekend sunshine, the patio was great for people watching while enjoying a reasonably priced light afternoon dish or a $6 dessert. True to its European flair, the restaurant is closed on Sundays. Otherwise, visit between 11:30am to 10pm.
