Travel Iceland: The Black Sand Beaches of Vik

Vik in South Iceland would have been a lovely little town to explore on our roadtrip around the country, but because of time constraints we drove straight to the black sand beach, which is the must-see of this region.

Black sand beaches are nothing new to me, I’ve seen them in Hawaii before!  Because of the ashes from the volcanic eruptions all over Iceland, most of the beaches in Iceland are of black sand.  But they are always nice to visit because it’s so different from anything back home. It’s also a reminder of just how near you are to volcanic activity.

I think the beaches at Vik are particularly impressive because of the vastness of the beach, the unblocked view of the sky, and the jagged stone jutting out at various angles like statues in the sea. Also, there are lots of lava formations to explore.

Dyrhólaey and Kirkjufara are the two main black sand beach attractions near Vik. You can drive right to the end of a road which takes you to a parking lot, and then walk through the beach.
