Ride with the locals and soar over the city with the Mi Teleferico Cable Car in La Paz. Opened in 2014, the Austrian-designed Mi Teleferico Cable Car system was built as means of transportation for local Bolivians and to combat the inefficiencies of their bus-based public transit system and growing traffic concerns . Rather than a 30 – 45 minute transit from El Alto down to La Paz, locals can just hop on a cable car. Imagine commuting to work via cable car?!
This was probably the most modern thing I did in Bolivia and dirt cheap (by North American standards) for tickets: less than $2CAD for each portion of the route. The whole experience seemed very safe and orderly. There were lots of staff members to keep commuters board each car, and signs and instructions about the route. The rest of the city is fairly underdeveloped, and I was really surprised to see something as safe and technologically advanced as Mi Teleferico in La Paz.
There are currently three colour-coded lines: red, yellow and green. My recommendation is to start with the yellow line for the best view of the city. Overall, this was a wonderful, yet very affordable way to see the city:
