Matthew Cameron has built a reputation among friends and family in Vancouver for his enthusiastic and thoughtful approach to home improvement. His favourite DIY projects involve painting, giving him a chance to use colour to shape the mood of a room, refresh furniture, and create original details that reflect his personality. In this interview, he talks about his creative process, the colours he prefers, and what painting adds to his daily life in Vancouver.
MMV: What made you focus on painting as your main DIY interest?
MATTHEW CAMERON: Painting was one of the first projects I attempted when I bought a home with my wife. I started with a small room and liked how the change of colour gave it a completely new vibe. I love the creative process of painting. It gives me a goal to work towards, and I can see results right away. It keeps me motivated to do other projects.
MMV: What painting projects do you like the most?
MATTHEW CAMERON: I like painting furniture and walls. I’ve painted tables, chairs, and bookshelves. I’ve painted entire rooms. I’m also a fan of incorporating accent walls and colour-blocking to break up space. Every job helps me shape how the home feels.
MMV: What colour choices do you usually go with?
MATTHEW CAMERON: It depends on the theme of your space. Do you want warm tones like beiges or cool tones like blues or greys? I choose colours that fit the light in the room. I typically go for a matte or eggshell finish to keep it simple and clean
MMV: What tips would you share with a newbie painter in Vancouver who wants to try their first project?
MATTHEW CAMERON: Start with one item or wall. Use good tools and take your time. Paint stores in Vancouver have helpful staff who can guide you through colour matching and prep. I also suggest doing all your taping and sanding before you even open the paint can. Preparation is the name of the game, it makes the job a whole lot easier.
MMV: How has painting changed the way you live in your home?
MATTHEW CAMERON: Painting my home just makes me more aware of my surroundings. It gives me control over how the space feels. It also gives me feelings of accomplishment. Not to mention, it’s the colour I prefer. They make me happy, they make me feel peaceful, and of course, I chose them along with my wife, so we both feel that way. That brings a sense of pride and belonging in our home that I love.
