Last weekend, Modern Mix Vancouver was treated to a DIY workshop at West Elm on South Granville. The project in question? A West Elm graphic lacquer tray embellished (or should I say, ELMbellished) with black chalkboard paint and silver and gold metallic tape.
This crafty project was inspired by Erica Domesek, the New York based blogger of PS. I Made This. In celebration of her book launch, PS. You’re Invited, all the West Elms’ across North America held a one day DIY session to make the same project.
Erica’s original creation is a criss-cross of metallic tape with triangular areas painted in the chalkboard paint finish. I spent days thinking about what I wanted to do differently, and finally decided to challenge myself and make a diamond. It turned out beautifully stylish – I am so happy with it!
This West Elm workshop is great for grabbing a girlfriend and participating in it together. It required moderate concentration, and it was nice to be able to bounce ideas off each other. Erica Lam (from The Style Spy) and I chatted throughout the workshop and definitely got our fix of catching up. She also helped me make sure my diamond lines were symmetrical.
Based on the success of this DIY workshop, West Elm hopes to host more of these events in the future. Stay tuned on Modern Mix for more details!
PS. Someone asked me about my hair in the photo. I got a shampoo & blowdry with John Frieda’s “Luxurious Volume” products the evening before at Blo Dry Bar in Yaletown.

I would totally buy your diamond try! Very chic 🙂 I’ll have to try out this project soon since I love having DIY pieces around the house.
