OPUS Hotel – Rooftop Restaurant Approval Meeting (Nov. 7, 2008)

This past Halloween, I started off my night of barhopping in Yaletown at Elixir and Opus Bar and arguably one of the cornerstone venues most representative of the YUPPIE crowd. Now, Opus Hotel needs our help and support! Opus Hotel has made an application to the City of Vancouver to allow additional height and floor area to accommodate a seasonal 250-seat rooftop restaurant.
.
Their fifth and final approval meeting will be at City Hall (457 West 12th Avenue) this Friday, November 7th from 6pm to 8pm and the owner of Opus Hotel, John Evans, is soliciting your presence, support and positive feedback at the meeting.
.

Modern Mix Monday – Winners

Looking for something to do? Every Monday morning, we present to you “Modern Mix Monday”, a brief but link-filled one-liner review of our past weekend loaded with suggestions to inspire you for your next!

In a desperate attempt to get out of the house to beat the post-Halloween blues, I went to the new Winners (491 West 8th Avenue) on Sunday afternoon. In my excitement at low prices, I exclaimed to my friend, “why doesn’t everyone shop here?!” but I soon found out. Because of its sheer size (and attachment to HomeSense), it can be quite overwhelming to shop there. If you have the patience to look, you may be able to find something to your liking. There were some Seven and Guess Jeans for way below retail price. A plain brown Coach purse from a few seasons back. Nonetheless, we both agreed that the real deals were in the bath and body section with trendy looking lotions, soaps and bath products at ridiculously discounted prices.

RIOT – “clothing out” sale (November 6, 2008)

After 13 years making her world a Riot (the store formerly called Raya), owner Brenda McGuire has decided to move on to new surroundings. “I am definitely going to miss my neighbours and this community,” admits Brenda. “After so long, I have developed great friendships with so many people here, so I’m a little teary-eyed to go.”
.
On Thursday, November 6th, make the trek down to 1395 Commercial Drive one last time to take advantage of great fall collections, all marked down as much as 70%!
.
Sip on wine and flavoured sparkling water while you shop. And with any purchase of $200 or more, save an additional $20! Doors are open from 11am to 9pm so get there early before someone else snags your next discounted deal.

The Art Institute presents LA MUSIQUE

Although the entire graduating class displayed a sense of originality, I noticed three reappearing trends in the midst of their diversity:

1. The “sweetheart” shaped and strapless necklines which portrays a feminine look of glamor by accentuating the neck and shoulders.

2. Corsette-style, criss-crossing lace-ups. These appeared on the front and back of tops as well as more subtly on short-sleeved blouses.

3. Parallel columns of buttons, big and small. Similar to the buttons on double-breasted winter coats but on tops instead.
