Wings+Horns – Clothing Sale (December 5 to 7, 2008)
Wings & Horns (formerly Spruce), a relatively cryptic brand of upscale streetwear and casual workwear for men, designed and manufactured in our very own Vancouver, B.C. is having a sample sale at 188 West 6th Ave. I’d be inclined to say it’s one of the best sample sales ever displayed by the label, with stock that includes some of their famous tiger fleece hoodies alongside thermals, buffalo check jackets, raw denim and tees for ridiculously low prices. Sizes are available from XS – XL, and if you go early enough in the day there’s usually enough stock to give you a great selection.
.
Collections of Wings and Horns can be found locally at Holt Renfrew, Roden Gray,Gravity Pope (footwear) and Dutil Denim (denim). However, it’s a fairly certain guarantee that the deals at this sample sale will outshine anything those stores can offer. While their designs are usually not out of the ordinary enough to jutsify the regular retail price they command, the sheer quality of the material and details in the construction (No YKK zippers!) are definitely worth the prices you will be finding at this sale. Note it is cash only.

Shop Cocoon – Friends & Family Sale (Thurs. December 4)
The concept behind Shop Cocoon (3345 Cambie Street @17th Avenue) is simple. Artists and designers lease shelf space from the store and are also required to work a minimum number of hours behind the counter each week, allowing them the opportunity to showcase their emerging brands without having to undergo the costs of starting up their own shop. The brands available at Shop Cocoon will not be unfamiliar to Vancouverites who are interested in the local and independent designer scene. From Tyte Lids to Filou Designs, these clothing and accessories have frequented the likes of Portobello West, Spend on Trend and more!
.
On Thursday December 4, from 11am to 9pm, save up to 30% off the entire shop for their friends and family sale. Goodies will be served.

Modern Mix Monday – Bean Around the World
Looking for something to do? Every Monday morning, we present to you “Modern Mix Monday”, a brief but link-filled one-liner review of our past weekend loaded with suggestions to inspire you for your next!

Exam season is upon us. If you are still a student at UBC, sometimes it can get boring studying in campus libraries. On Saturday afternoon, my friend and I decided to study at Bean Around the World instead. The cafe on 4456 West 10th Avenue is a cozy, mid-sized café with forest green and dark red walls which correspond to its easily recognizable logo. Wooden tables and stools are scattered throughout the front half of the café, while low couches and a fireplace take up the back. He ordered a medium (16 oz.) chai tea latte for $4.35, while I got a chicken teriyaki wrap for $5.50, grilled “panini-style”. We spread out our textbooks, binders and notebooks on a large, wooden table and felt comfortable spending the entire afternoon studying leisurely without feeling like we were “taking up space”. In fact, there were other students there as well. The only distracting aspect of studying here is how the door opens every few minutes for customers and you can hear the loud traffic and rain from outside.
.
For those of you who live a little further East, there are two other Bean Around the Worlds on Main Street as well as other cafes on Granville, Cambie and North Vancouver (to name a few).
Boudoir – Holiday Fashion Show at Opus Hotel
If there was any event that could put you into a holiday mood, it was this one. Opus is a beautiful L.A inspired lounge, with white tile walls, and high ceilings, which were decorated with sporadic large glittering stars hanging above us.
The dresses themselves, which can all be found at Boudoir in Yaletown, were a myriad of satins and modals, in blacks and creams for all of your formal events, as well reds, sky blues, champagnes, coffee brown and greens for a few punches of eye catching colors. Over 25 dresses traipsed down the runway, in styles for the flirty and feminine girl, such as their salmon satin dress (notably worn by the beautiful violinist), with a scoop neck and voluminous short sleeves.
