Pearl Drops Teahouse – Open Teahouse Cocktail Night (Saturday Feb. 7, 2009)

My friend Melody from Cup of Red sent me an invitation to Pearl Drops Teahouse‘s “Open Teahouse Cocktail Night” @ 422 Willingdon Avenue in Burnaby. If you’re in the area, you should stop by for tea beverage sampling and yummy hord ‘oeuvres from 7pm to 10pm. There will also be door prizes. Who knows, maybe this will be your new favorite watering hole for Asian beverages and more! For more information, check out the Facebook Event.

Froyo Swirl – buy one get one free coupon (valid until Feb. 28th)

Froyo Swirl (820 Homer Street) in Yaletown is a healthy frozen yogurt joint. I personally haven’t tried it out myself yet, but I found a 2-for-1 coupon for their signature Froyo Swirl. The concept is simple and similar to Scoop on West 4th: take healthy, plain frozen yogurt and add toppings including blueberries, mango, oreo cookies and more! Even though it doesn’t say so directly on the coupon, the offer apparently expires on February 28th. If you end up going, let me know how it is!

Modern Mix Monday – Moderne Burger

Looking for something to do? Every Monday morning, we present to you “Modern Mix Monday”, a brief but link-filled one-liner review of our past weekend loaded with suggestions to inspire you for your next!

I had lunch on Sunday afternoon with Miranda Sam of Style By Fire at Moderne Burger (2507 West Broadway). It’s such a cute little diner! The restaurant recently went through renovations and an expansion, but the joint has still managed to maintain its retro feel with mint-green walls and aluminum paneling. There were booths against the wall and windows, paper placemats and stools for sitting placed around the counter… As Miranda brought up, if this was in New York, the area would be much more crowded and less laid back with people rushing to eat their burgers while multitasking and reading the newspaper with a coffee in hand. The burgers were pretty good too – not much menu selection, but about $7.45 for a burger (ie. veggie, ground turkey, steak, etc.), and $1.25 for additional toppings including mushrooms, cheese or fried onions. I got a turkey burger, plain as can be, and it still tasted good. No fries, no milkshake ;).

LES Gallery – “Various Business” opening reception (Sat. Feb 7th)

Another artsy post for the weekend. The LES Gallery (1879 Powell Street) will be featuring the “Various Business” exhibition, an exhibition of three Canadian painters of varying styles, aesthetics and concepts. Although these local artists, Margaux Williamson (Fine Arts, Queens University), Laura Piasta (BFA, Emily Carr) and Julia Feyrer (BFA, Emily Carr) share the same medium, it is acknowledged that “through comparison we are able to measure individuality”. The opening reception will be on February 7th from 7pm to 11pm, and the exhibition runs for a month until March 7th.

LES Gallery is a small but growing commercial gallery in Vancouver, BC that’s proud to support and feature a roster of local and international artists. The focus of this intimate gallery is to push for new and innovative ideas with the shows it produces as well as with the artists it represents.
