Local Lives: Carla Hogg, Founder of Gentle Fawn

Founded by wife-and-husband team Carla and Danny Hogg, Gentle Fawn is a Vancouver-based clothing company that just celebrated fifteen years in business!   In spite of the brand’s growth —  now at 700 retailers across North America — the founding duo has consciously made the decision to keep their design studio and team of 24 staff members local in Mount Pleasant, while raising their two daughters in their hometown.

Our latest Local Lives interview features Carla and how she lives in Vancouver.  Not only do we get to find out what a fashion brand CEO loves to do in Vancouver, but we also get to ask for her best style tips for (rainy) Vancouver.

Read on to find out more about the local life of Carla Hogg and how she lives in Vancouver:

How long have you lived in Vancouver for?

My family and I moved to Vancouver from Moncton, New Brunswick when I was in Grade 1, and I’ve been here ever since!

What’s your “claim to fame” in Vancouver

I am the President / CEO of Gentle Fawn – a women’s clothing label that my husband Danny and I co-founded in 2003. We’re based in Vancouver and design feminine, effortless pieces, perfect for the everyday. You can find Gentle Fawn online or at over 700 retailers in Canada and the US.

What are your best style tips for rainy Vancouver?

Aside from investing in waterproof rain jacket and a good pair of rain boots, I find that layering is key (especially on the West Coast) as it can get a little chilly. I suggest opting for a cozy mid-weight sweater over your favourite t-shirt so you can layer up or down, depending on where your day takes you. Doesn’t hurt to also have a stash of umbrellas in the car either!

Any local hidden gems to share with Modern Mix Vancouver readers?

Parliament in Gastown is where I satisfy my green thumb. Their premium potted plant selection is one of the best in the city, and I love walking through the store.

What’s the best way to connect with your local neighbourhood or community?

Vancouver makes it easy for me to feel connected with all the events happening around the city. Whether it’s attending industry events or shopping at a local farmers market, there are lots of great Vancouver websites that keep us up to date on what’s happening around town.

What are your best Vancouver date night suggestions?

The Reflections winter patio at Hotel Georgia is such a beautiful spot, especially if you’re looking to get in the holiday spirt!

Where are your favourite places to shop in Vancouver?

South Granville and Gastown are my favourite shopping neighbourhoods – they have such a good mix of shops and I can get everything I need.

Who are some of your favourite Vancouver brands to support?

I’m a huge fan of local accessory designers Leah Alexandra and Melanie Auld. They offer everything from dainty everyday pieces, to bold, statement pieces that are great for events or a night out. They are often our go-tos when selecting jewellery for Gentle Fawn photoshoots!
