Taking over the former Monk McQueens site, Vancouver diners can now enjoy the False Creek waterfront view again with the opening of a third location of Mahony & Sons.
Mahony & Sons Stamps Landing is a 10,000 square foot space with 600 seats spread across two levels – 150 upstairs, 150 downstairs, and 300 on the four waterfront patios. Key features include an Oyster Bar (a natural fit for this waterfront location), an extensive patio with double-sided fireplace, and a private sunset patio perfect for small groups.
If you went to UBC in the past couple of years, you’ll know Mahony & Sons as the welcoming Irish resto-bar on campus. The newest location is much larger than the first, yet still maintains a homey Irish authenticity, through various collaborations between Canadian and Irish craftsmen.
The inspiration for Mahony & Sons’ interior design comes form age-old taverns in Ireland. Embellished hardwood moldings and hand-carved wood are staples in classic Irish public houses. Mahony & Sons has incorporated these stylistic touches into the design and decor of their newest location.
Mahony & Sons hired a Dublin-based company to design the restaurant and produce the millwork, including the soaring two-level back bar, the restaurant’s centerpiece. The final product was shipped to Vancouver and assembled by local tradespeople. The overall design is a blend of traditional and contemporary Irish influences with thoughtfully selected materials to create an authentic Irish feel.
According to Peter Jr. Mahony, the General Manager of Mahony & Sons’ third location:
“Irish social houses are famously welcoming – you always know you can go in, order a pint and start up a conversation with anyone at the bar. Growing up in a large family with lots of friends around, Mum’s motto about dinner was always ‘the more the merrier’. With that kind of upbringing it was only natural for us to create a space where people can enjoy good food, good drink, good music, and good company.”
Now that’s something to celebrate. So grab a beer and shout Sláinte! as we toast and welcome another location of Mahony & Sons to Vancouver.
