NIXXI – Interview with Jada-lee Watson

Submitted by on June 1, 2009 – 7:01 pmNo Comment |

Jada-lee Watson of the local clothing line “Nixxi” designs with classic, organic textures. Dedicated to employing sustainable business practices, Nixxi sources fabrics made from natural and renewable fibres and works with a production house in Vancouver, BC. Jada-lee generously donated a raffle prize clothing piece to Modern Mix Vancouver’s One-year Anniversary & Reader Appreciation Party. Let’s learn more about the Nixxi line through MMV’s interview with Jada-Lee.

“Most local designers are producing in smaller numbers with an attention to detail and quality. You may spend a little bit more for this, rather than the less expensive mass-produced styles, but you end up with a unique design that lasts through many seasons.”

MMV: What is your background in fashion/designing and how did you get involved with the sustainability movement?

I have always had a love for fashion, clothing and design. My interest in sewing began from revamping existing pieces. About 6 years ago I started designing and making original pieces to sell at the local market. After co-creating a previous line for three years, I founded Nixxi independently in 2007.

Being that I live a lifestyle where I try to make the most environmentally respectful choices, such as eating organically, conserving energy, etc, it was a natural choice to use fabrics made with organic and sustainable fibres.

MMV: Why is it important for BC shoppers to support local designers?

Buying locally is supports the economy in our community, allowing us to keep producing new designs each season which also supports others in the industry, such as the patternmakers and seamstresses. Most local designers are producing in smaller numbers with an attention to detail and quality. You may spend a little bit more for this, rather than the less expensive mass-produced styles, but you end up with a unique design that lasts through many seasons.

MMV: The Nixxi piece donated to MMV’s one year party was available in Blue and Black. How do you decide what colors to make your clothing pieces?

When designing a season, I choose textures and colors that compliment each other. Black, white and gray are standards in my line, and then I choose 1-3 color accents each season. I love color, so it is always a challenge to edit them.

MMV: What is your favorite piece in your summer 2009 collection and why?

My favorites change throughout the season. Right now, the Ruche Top and Fringe Wrap Top [shown] are the ones I am wearing the most!
