Vancouver resale boutique Mine & Yours has partnered with Emerging African Entrepreneurs (EAE) to host a daytime party and clothing drive that aims to collect 750 articles of clothing. The items will serve as the beginning inventory for 20 female-run retail startups in East Africa.

Donating goods directly to individuals so they can start a business with those goods is a unique funding approach.  Donors will have the opportunity to see exactly who their clothing goes to, and watch how that entrepreneur builds her business around their donations through photos and regular updates.  Maybe you’ll even spot a piece of your gently-used clothing, appear on the other side of the world!

Out of hundreds of Ugandan and Kenyan applicants, EAE selected 20 women who qualified by submitting business plans and by participating in business education courses.  Each woman will receive 37 pieces of quality clothing to sell in her own clothing resale business, as well as business incubation services in the form of education – specifically marketing and financial planning.

“This is a fun and unique way for people in Vancouver to ‘pay it forward’ to women in Africa. In the resale business, I’m always inspired by the journey of a garment, and in this case, these garments will journey all the way to Kenya and Uganda where they will form the foundation for women-owned startups with the same business model as Mine & Yours. These aren’t handouts, they’re a ‘hand-ups’!” – Jigme Love, Owner, Mine & Yours.

The Clothing Drive party takes place at Mine & Yours on Sunday, September 10th at 1025 Howe Street.  The cost of admission is 10 articles of quality used clothing, or $20.

Guests of the party will enjoy mimosas, African cuisine, and beauty and fashion presentations while Afro-beat DJ Kenny Davis Ntolla performs live. Giveaways and door prizes include: mini personal styling sessions with Fabiola from “Fab Food And the City”, skincare samples from Flora & Fauna Apothecary, a luxury prize from skincare company September Beauty, numerous gifts from Ana V Beauty, and more. Each donor will also receive a $20 gift voucher to Mine & Yours, redeemable for purchases made on the day of the event.

“In Africa, there are limited options to buy good clothing. This program will teach women how to source, style, merchandise, and re-sell high quality designer 2nd hand clothing, and run a successful business around it –just like they do at Mine & Yours.  We are asking our clothing drive party guests to bring any good quality men’s, women’s and children’s clothing and accessories that they no longer use. I am then personally bringing all the items to East Africa myself.” – Orianna Lacey, Founder of Emerging African Entrepreneurs.
